A warm welcome from the Chair of Governors

On behalf of the governors of Brampton Primary Academy it is my great pleasure to welcome you as you visit our school’s website.

The 2020/21 school year saw the appointment of Ms Winter-Nolan as our new Headteacher and Miss Wellington as the new Deputy Headteacher. They were both already working in the school and their promotions were very popular with governors and the school community as a whole. We are extremely grateful for the fantastic work Miss Clark did for the school during her tenure as Headteacher, leading the school to its well-deserved “Good” Ofsted grading. She continues to support the school in her role as Deputy Director of Education for REAch2.

It is fair to say Ms Winter-Nolan and Miss Wellington’s first year in post could really not have been more challenging, as first the school was open for the return of all pupils, albeit with significant restrictions in place for parents/carers, staff, and children; then the closure of the school to all but the most vulnerable children and those of key workers in January; followed by the full return to school of all children in March.

Throughout this year, governors have continued to work in the remote manner in which we have operated since March 2020. Ms Winter-Nolan provided weekly updates to governors between January and March this year, keeping us informed about remote learning engagement, the in-school provision for the children attended and very much not least how the school was supporting the disadvantaged children not attending. On a personal note, I should like to thank Marcus Rashford for all his efforts to ensure that the government provided the necessary support to those children at risk of going hungry during school breaks.

Governors have conducted virtual visits, to find out the details from staff members about the hard work that has been going on throughout these difficult times. We have held virtual meetings during this year and, although far from ideal, it has allowed us to provide the necessary challenge and support to the school. We are hopeful that we will be able to all meet in person for our final Local Governing Body meeting of the year in July.

On behalf of the Governing Body, I should like to thank all our parents and carers for the support they have provided to their children during this school year. I know my daughters – now both in their twenties – are both very thankful they didn’t have to rely on my support.

Finally, I would ask that all parents and carers of the children at Brampton Primary Academy to continue to support their child’s learning. This means minimising their time out of school and spending time to take an interest in the work they are doing. The time you spend reading with your children and helping them with any projects and tasks that are set for them will ensure that they make the best progress possible as they grow through the school.

What is a school governor?

The role of a governor is to act as a critical friend to the school. We provide a robust and consistent challenge as we review the progress and achievement of our pupils. Under normal circumstances, governors visit the school regularly, observing lessons, speaking to children and hearing their thoughts on what they are doing and how they feel at school. We also speak to the staff to understand how they feel things are going across the school.

We also watch how the senior leadership team of the school use the resources and funding at their disposal to ensure the children have the best possible opportunity to maximise their potential during their time at Brampton Primary Academy.

Overall we work with the senior leadership team at the school to ensure that children have a safe, nurturing and stimulating place to learn, not just the core subjects the school offers like reading, writing and maths, but also the values and behaviours that we believe will give them the best possible start in life.

Meet the Governors

Brendan Hollyer

I have more than thirty years’ experience of working for financial institutions in the City of London and have been a school governor since 2002. During my time, I have been a governor at primary and secondary schools, both in Bexley and at other schools across the South East of England, having worked for a Multi Academy Trust.
 

I first became a governor at the school my daughters attended, as I wanted to use my financial experience to help with budgeting for the school year.
 

In 2018, I joined the governing body of Brampton Primary Academy as Chair of Governors.

In January 2014 I was designated as a National Leader of Governance by the National College of Teaching and Learning and work with different governing bodies, providing support and coaching.
 

The children and young learners are our ambassadors and present a very positive image of what is going well at Brampton. With a great Senior Leadership Team in place, we are well on the way to ensuring they can all reach their full potential and they are a credit to our school.
